  • Hello from Mr. Macchiato

    By Mr. Macchiato

Ok, sorry for not posting yesterday.  I was struggling to come up with a code name for myself.  Let me explain: there are two of us writing for the site: writer #1 is a girl and I am the boy.  We thought code names might help you guys tell our posts apart!

So without further ado, my name is Mr. Macchiato (the first batch of writers will all be cafe-themed, since so many first dates are over coffee).  What is a macchiato?

Macchiato" simply means "marked" or "stained," and in the case of caffè macchiato, this means literally "espresso marked with milk." Traditionally it is made with one shot of espresso, and the small amount of added milk was the mark.

However, later the "mark" came to refer to the foamed milk that was put on top to indicate the beverage has a little milk in it. The reason was for the baristas to show the serving waiters the difference between an espresso and an espresso with a little milk in it; the latter was marked.

I am half-Japanese and half-white, so I guess the milk represents my white mark?  I use the word mark rather than stain, because that's not how I think about my heritage!  A lot of my observations about dating are tied to race, and so you have that to look forward to (or not).

I also chose the name because it sounds like "macho" and I am a man.  I am really interested in gender, but you probably figured that one out already.

It's nice to meet you all!  We'll be adding more new bloggers to this site over the next few weeks.  If you're interested in blogging on the site, please drop us a message or a comment!
