  • First Crush

    By Mr. Macchiato

I was such a late bloomer that I basically ignored all romantic cues from girls until I was well in college.  Which brings me to the story of the first crush of my dating career, during junior high school.

When I was in seventh grade Health class, I sat behind this girl Jenna.  We would have regular writing assignments, and she would invariably turn around and ask to borrow some paper from me.

In the beginning it was fine, but she would literally mooch paper off of me every day.  After a while, I started to get annoyed.  It's not very expensive to buy your own packet of 200 sheets of ruled paper!

Finally near the end of the semester, she turned around to ask for paper one last time.  I was genuinely confused.

"Geez," I swore (hardcore huh), "Why don't you ever bring your own paper to class?!"

She turned BRIGHT red, like I had caught her cheating or something.  It was that very moment that I realized that she probably had her own paper all along... she was just borrowing paper from me because she liked me.  It all made sense... after all, girls were always the one with the paper (secure in their own plastic Trapper Keepers, of course).  Boys were supposed to borrow paper from girls, not the other way around.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the first time anyone ever crushed on me.  Well actually it was the second, but the first one is too painful a story to tell here.  I wish this story had a happy ending, but Jenna was too embarrassed to borrow paper after that... and after Health class ended, our paths never crossed again.  As you can tell, I was a real natural when it came to dating.

What was the first time you realized someone liked you?  How did you handle it?

I am so ignorant to social cues that I still have no idea when someone likes me  (unless they choose to tell me that is) and I am 25.

Fourth grade, I was told. I ran away after turning bright red. Same general trend up 'til now - I like to play.

Actually, I still really have no idea if someone likes me or not unless I'm purposefully flirtatious.

im not joking when I say this...but i used to be like by multiple girls in nursery school and kindergarten.  then after that...i wasnt so sure...and then i got real sick in 6th and 7th grade, which made me physically disgusting.  that's over now...occasionally i'll have an episode.  after that my self-esteem plummeted and now i have no social clues.  seems like now only i have crushes on girls who don't like me that way...you know..."you're more like a friend..."

We weren't allowed to have Trapper Keepers at my school.  I guess they considered them to be a distraction, too cool for school.

Ugh. One of the main reasons I want to build a time machine is to go back in time and slap myself for all the times there was a girl who liked me and I was too indecisive to do anything about it.

bahaha, that's a great story. thanks for the laughs. :)

& i have always and will always have horrible luck with boys. i'm doomed for friendship with the lot of them. haha.

Trapper Keepers! who didnt have one of those things! they were actually banned in the schools in my town because they were said to be too loud. stupid if you ask me!

as for someone liking me, i was clueless. i was too into hanging out with my friends. though, in 6th grade, this girl handed me a 'friendship' bracelet and then told me that someone asked her to make it for them. i asked her who and she said the boys name. i looked around for him on the playground since we were outside at recess. i saw him, and when he saw me look at him, he got all shy and avoided me for the rest of the year. lame.
