  • Pucker Up . . . Later?

    By Miss Double Shot

I'm a late bloomer - I like to think of it as a) procrastination and b) letting my awesomeness incubate for longer than most people need. I had my growth spurt late, I got my license years after my 16th birthday, I became interested in boys far later than my friends did . . . so it only made sense that my first kiss would happen after all my friends'.

I remember being obsessed with getting it out of the way, because after a certain point, it goes from being a fact of life ("whatever, I'll get to it eventually") to becoming incredibly frustrating. I don't even think any of my friends knew - I could usually fake my way through conversations by nodding every once in a while and saying "oh yeah," like I had some vague idea of what they were talking about whenever romance came up in conversation.

Kissing and telling is not how I roll, but suffice it to say when it finally happened, I was happy because I could start thinking about anything other than smooching.

One of my close friends from high school has decided that she wants her first kiss to be at the altar on her wedding day. I was flabbergasted when she told me. How does the courtship/relationship process work without kissing? Abstinence before marriage is one thing, but kissing seems like such a vital part of the whole experience that I couldn't believe that any couple would go through with what she's decided to do.

Since then, I've heard that that this is a relatively common practice. And, to be honest, I admire her tenacity . . . looking back on it, it would've been nice to have my first kiss be with someone I knew I'd be committed to and someone I really loved. I guess I'm a late bloomer by nature and she's one by choice.

Were you a late bloomer?  If you don't mind sharing, when was your first kiss?
