  • Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out

    By Miss Double Shot

My friend has a 45 minute commute every morning that's usually spent waking up to music and reading. Like most people on the train, she listened to her iPod on the way to work, but one morning, she jumped on the F train and pushed the on button, only to find the worst possible situation for a commuter who wanted musical bliss on her morning ride.

    Her battery was dead.

She didn't realize until that day, though, that she shared the same commuting schedule as a cute guy who had been trying to catch her eye since she had moved to the city

Their eyes met on the train and they started talking. Train Guy admitted that he'd always been trying to get her attention but didn't try to talk to her because he was afraid of bothering her.

She'd never realized that anyone had been trying to get her attention because she'd always been so engrossed in reading or iPodding - all it took was one day of her looking around at everyone else to realize what was going on around her.

And although nothing came out of the whole situation (he took the later train and she hasn't seen him for a while), "I've never been happier to have a dead battery," she told me later.

Do you ever get lost in your own world, and just tune out everything and everyone around you?
