  • Something Suddenly Came Up

    By Miss Double Shot

I grew up watching The Brady Bunch and was always shocked at how popular Marcia and Greg, the eldest two kids, were with their respective significant others.

In one episode, Marcia sets up two dates at the same time and has to break a date with one of the guys - Greg's advice is to say "sorry, but something suddenly came up". The guy says he understands, Marcia goes out with the other guy and gets away with it without even trying.

I borrowed that excuse once (thankfully, on a guy who hadn't seen an episode of the show), and it worked, but I felt horrible afterward - first, for canceling on a guy so suddenly, and second, for using such a dumb excuse.

What's the lamest line you've used to get out of a date?

I never got out of a date with an excuse, but I do see the big embarrassment of knowing that you look good enough to attract two dates. To make things worse, the belief of the older brother or sister is that they get so many dates that it makes the younger one feel like they are missing something.

So, you can certainly believe that having two dates could have been avoid had you remembered you had a date. I'm surprised that through all this, she didn't say "well, what came up?"That would have been the worst thing in the world. Hehe!

But the mentality of teenhood is that if you look good, you can get away with almost anything. That was what Marcia fell back on, as well as Greg. But in real life, it just isn't easy to get out of that jam, and good looks just further put you into an unwanted hole.

In HS, my senior prom this dude asked me to go. I said I had to ask my mom (I really did, she told me early on that I couldn't go). She said no...cuz she was afraid there would be a shooting (darn paranoid korean moms who watch too much TV) I didn't want to go with him anyways- so it wasn't a lie at all. However, I traded in prom for an all expenses paid trip to back pack around Europe. I didn't get to go to Europe-- She's afraid of sending me to prom in the same city we lived in... I don't get why I thought she'd let me go to another country... alone. But yeah.. "My mom said I can't go"

Hahaha I used "something came up" before too! I didn't feel bad about it though, since I didn't want to go. :)

I used to say I asked my mom and she didnt let me go (I wouldnt ask anyway) but now I just say something came up or that I just remembered that I had a prior engagement (there doesnt have to be anything). I don't feel bad about it, but I'd hope she doesnt press me about the other thing I'm supposed to be doing.

Heh, isn't that the same episode where Marcia gets hit in the nose with the football and her second date is too embarrassed to go out with her?  That's what happens when you use a lame excuse!
