  • Dating Outside Your Type

    By Miss Double Shot

I tend to date within my own species - geeky pop culture fanatics with penchants for home-baked goodies, nights spent at home watching old movies and karaoke.

I've always wondered, though, what it'd be like to date someone radically different from myself.

Walking home last night, I happened to be behind a bunch of bros and tried to compare them to the traditional definition of a bro.
    • Bachelor #1 wore a polo shirt and a trucker hat cocked to the side
    • Bachelor #2 held a conversation with his friends as he occasionally talked to someone named Cody on the phone
      • on a Razr
    • Bachelor #3 used the word "crunk" three times
I don't think I could ever date those guys long-term, but I'd love to try once just to see what the experience would be like. I have a feeling their hair gel and Jack Johnson CD spending would rival what I pay in rent. On the other side, though, maybe broskis are, like, totally sweet and I'm missing out.

    Do you have a type?

I've never really had a "type."  I've dated the high school football player, the alterna-rock outsider guy, the wannabe musician druggie...  I guess I've never dated a "bro" but then I'm instantly turned off whenever I see a baseball cap worn sideways.

one of my exboyfriends was a straightedge posergoth kid, the other drugged up all the time.

one extreme to the other, and neither worked out.

i think everyone just needs balance - not necessarily a certain "type" of person. it's not fair to label people based on their interests and style.

I do sort of have a type that I'm attracted to: introverted, smart, artistic (that includes all sorts of artists. My last two crushes were a graphic designer and a composer, respectively), quirky, kind of an "outside the box" kind of guy, not super traditional, adventurous, at least a little outdoorsy...I've dated outside it before, and even though it's usually an interesting experience, I start wanting someone who's my type and therefore understands me. (I'm a bit odd, so I need a guy who I feel "gets" me)
My last boyfriend wasn't exactly my type. We got along really well for awhile. But it didn't work out. I don't think I was much his type either.

i have an ideal but i definitely do end up dating a particular "type" of guy - the arrogant, charming, know it all with napoleon complex. someone needs to hook me up with a tall ambitious family oriented guy. seriously.

My type is the "guy you could never EVER introduce to you family." Oddly enough, none of them have ever been worth the trouble.

My current boy craze is the guy who can handle meeting the family with much charm and grace and then go out and be the "bad boy" later. It's a fantastic combo.
