  • SURPRISE! We're dating!

    By Mr. Macchiato

I woke up at five minutes to noon with a start: OMG, I had lunch in five minutes with a friend!

I had been a bit confused when Aliana had invited me out to a fancy off-campus restaurant for lunch.  Most of my college friends ate on-campus... but then again, maybe she just wanted to treat me.  I had met her through a tutoring program in Economics, and she had been saying how she wanted to repay me for all that help.  Besides it was just lunch, right?

Anyway I didn't have time to think about any of this: I was running late.  I didn't have time to shower or shave, so I just washed my face, ran my fingers through my hair, and raced off to the restaurant.

Imagine my surprise when I saw Aliana in the lobby of the restaurant.  When I tutored her, she was usually wearing sweatpants and a tee, which matched her overall look: no makeup and her hair in a ponytail.  Today she was wearing makeup and a sun dress! Considering this was lunch on a weekday, it was suddenly very clear: she was thinking of our lunch as a date.

When she first saw me, she lit up like a Christmas tree... then she saw my outfit, and her face fell.  She recovered quickly though, and we headed into the restaurant.  TO BE CONTINUED

Have you ever been surprised to find yourself on a date you weren't aware of?

    That's a beautiful memory!

Nah, well, It's happened twice, he considered it a date and I was not aware of that until in the middle of it. Mostly just awkward...

Well isn't that the best kind of date! The kind you just fall into? Haha. I hope you two had a nice one, anyway. [Btw, I'm looking forward to what happened next.]

I'm beginning to think some of my guy friends thought I went on a date with them before... oh damn. Realization sucks.

Wow! I have read several of these suspense blogs lately. Maybe that's why my blood pressure is on the rise. Please continue!

I wanted to hang out with a female friend who I hadn't seen for months.  When I arrived at her place to pick her up, she told me her parents wanted to meet me before we went to hang out.  So when I went in to meet her parents that threw me off.  I didn't think of it as a date at first, and maybe she didn't either, but after meeting her parents, it just became awkward for myself and her because I attempted to make it seem more like a real "date."  Ended okay, despite my pathetic attempts at making moves on her.  We never ended up dating.  But we're really good friends right now.

thats a cool way of ending.  i do want to know so i will stay tuned.

i havent found myself on a date i was unaware of, but it always weird when youre talking to some girl and you all of a sudden realize by something she says or how she's acting, that she's diggin you as more than a friend.  can be very awkward when not reciprocated.

There's one time I can remember when I went to a club to listen to a band with a friend.  I forget who invited whom (I may have called him) and I don't know if it was ever clear to either of us if it was a date or not.  At the end of the night there was just a hug, and it was one of the few times we ever hung out just one on one.  I've always thought of it as just hanging out together (though I had a mild crush on him at the time), looking back I wonder how he saw it...

It's happened a few times, but with the same person. He always tries, and he doesn't understand that I would rather have him as a friend. I usually feel really bad about it when we hang out and I realized that no one else is with us, but what can you do??

  • Color_me_Karma@xanga

Yea, it was akward. And he stll kept trying even after my boyfriend and I got together...weird.

One of my friends is really outgoing and talks to everyone. At some event on campus, he met this guy who was a professor at another college. He figured it was networking, and exchanged numbers and emails with him. They met up once for lunch and just chatted, and afterwards the guy said if he ever wanted to come over to his house, he was welcome... and he could bring his laundry if he wanted. A few months later, he got a call from the guy about doing lunch again. He thought nothing of it, but it turned out to be a date. His girlfriend still teases him about it. :)

oh gawd.. that poor girl must've been crestfallen.

never been on a surprise date myself... but i have a friend who constantly tells herself that these "outtings" she goes on with all these guys are just "friends hanging out" even though it's always really obvious that these poor guys believe it's a date.

your situation must've been awkward.  i hope both of you at least had a decent lunch (made the best of an awkward situation?).

  • ryu@xanga

Hasn't happened to me yet lol.

Yes, many times.  How do you differentiate a date vs "just hanging out"??
