  • When Matchmaking Goes Wrong - Part II

    By Miss Double Shot

Where we last left our heroes, Guy was pondering a move across the Midwest and Girl was biding her time until he arrived.

"I'll be here in June," he told her, as he and I exchanged emails and doubts about the whole thing. Now that June's here, he's realized that he can't give up his empire, as he calls it, to take a chance on a girl who spends twelve hours a day at work and comes home stressed and exhausted, no matter how wonderful she may be.

He called her Saturday to tell her that he wasn't moving at the end of the month - it was neither financially nor emotionally feasible - but that he planned to visit and that he would like to move out here in the future.

She did not take it well.

"There was a lot of crying," he said, "and most of it was not from me." They haven't talked in a few days, which is unusual by now, and his emails to me are sparse and somber. "I'm young, dammit! I should be traveling right now, not settling down...right?"

Guy and I made a pros and cons list over the phone Saturday afternoon after the decision was made, and while most of the pros were about how fun New York is and what a great person Girl is, the cons were the more rational, grown-up thoughts about money, careers and the daunting idea of having to pack up all of his stuff for the second time in a year. Another con: although Guy and Girl have talked on the phone for what probably equates to weeks in talk time alone, they've only met in person four times.

Would you drop everything you had for a guy or girl you'd met four times?

Well, they have established an emotional connection beyond those four meetings over the phone and emails and whatnot... so it's not as though they're strangers.

That's really a tough call.  I think they should give it time but not let it all go!

I agree that you should travel when you're young, but why can't they travel together?  Hmm.
